Sophie El Assaad is an award winning theatre and visual artist. She grew up in the Middle-East and is currently based in Montreal, working as a costume and set designer. She is the recipient of 3 Montreal English Theatre Awards: Emerging Artist (2017) and Outstanding Costume Design ( 2017 and 2018). Sophie graduated with a BFA from Concordia University in 2015 and is an Alumni of the 2017/2018 Black Theatre Workshop’s Artist Mentorship Program. She has interests in both directing and writing and is currently working on developing her own work, focusing on youth and the interplay between Islamic and Western societies. Her artwork has been shown at the Textile Museum of Canada in Toronto and she was awarded the Myles Tyrell Purchase Award in 2010.
She has a DEC in Fine Arts from Dawson College, Studies in Fibres and Jewerly from OCADU, and has taken workshops in Laban, Grotowski and Viewpoints.
